History of Barney Views Cottage
The old school
A Place Where History Lives On
Barney Views Cottage is special not only for its beauty & serenity, but for the remarkable history it carries within its walls.
From 1918 to 1962, the cottage was the original Barney View School, a place of learning, community, & country life.
Originally located on Widgee Creek, the school was relocated to its current site for 145 pounds, marking an important chapter in the district’s early development. When it opened in 1918, 23 local children were enrolled. The school served generations of families before closing in October 1962, following the opening of the school in Rathdowney.
The legacy of those early years can still be felt today. Beside the cottage stands a small historic pine forest planted by the schoolchildren themselves, a living reminder of the young hands that once learned & played here, carrying echoes of its past. Now mature and thriving, the forest is home to abundant native birdlife, including the yellow-tailed black cockatoos that occasionally sweep through the canopy.
At the front of the property, the Barney View School plaque stands proudly in place, a quiet tribute to the generations who passed through its doors. Guests are invited to pause, notice, & reflect as they explore the grounds. To stay at Barney Views Cottage is to experience more than a peaceful mountain retreat; it is to spend time within a place that helped shape the local community, where history still gently lingers in the landscape.
